ABOUT
James Collector founded Storyteller to design landscapes that celebrate the stories of people and the ecosystems they call home.
Storytelling, as a design framework, encourages us to focus on the relationships and experiences within a landscape. Instead of overemphasizing the picturesque, the envisioning process finds exciting potential in how we engage with our outdoor spaces.
James’ design is informed by over a decade of professional experience in landscape installation, project management, and cost estimation. His years spent working with award-winning companies such as Rana Creek, Equinox Landscape, Planting Justice, Mariposa, The Presidio Trust, & Habitat Horticulture have honed a deep, multidisciplinary skillset. From permaculture gardens in East Bay to vertical and rooftop gardens in San Francisco to luxury residential projects in Sonoma County, James brings curiosity, attention to detail, and imagination to every project. He holds a Masters in Sustainable Development from UC Berkeley, a Permaculture Design Certification from Occidental Arts & Ecology Center, and has completed WELO and ARCSA certifications.
Prior to working in the landscape field, James was an environmental reporter. His blog Eco Heirlooms highlights his ongoing study of ecological design from around the world, including Argentina and Auroville. His firsthand knowledge of native plant selection is supported by his extensive experience designing and building irrigation, rainwater catchment, and greywater systems.
